These are a regular series of articles written originally for the Ryeland Flock Book Society newsletter, in which I visit Ryeland flocks around the UK, both large and small, established breeders and also new members. The purpose is a pure fact finding visit to share information on their methods, facilities and approach and to present the information as a concise summary in a question and answer format. There is purposely no editorial comment or judgement – simply the facts. Essentially, I hope these are the questions you would ask if you had time to visit these flocks yourself. Less experienced breeders will be keen to soak up knowledge from other flocks and perhaps copy some of their methods - more established flock owners may be confident of their own approach, but will still be curious about others who do it differently. You can be sure of one conclusion; there is no ‘right way’. The fascination of sheep breeding is the challenge of finding your own way that fits your land, your facilities and the time you have to devote to your Ryelands. If readers have any additional questions they would like asked on visits for future articles, then all suggestions would be welcome.
